  • Around 17 more flights had to stay in the holding pattern above Greater Manchester while the situation was sorted out.
  • The airfield remained closed for about 15 minutes, starting around 23:21 BST on Friday, August 21, 2026, when the police arrived and secured the breach.
  • According to Greater Manchester Police, it seems that the situation had to do with mental health issues and the man was admitted to a hospital for further assessment.

  • According to Manchester Airport, their operations have been normalized in the morning on Saturday after the emergency solution was put into effect.

Manchester ( Manchester Mirror) August 22, 2026 – Manchester Airport experienced significant disruption after a man gained unauthorised access to the airfield, prompting the temporary closure of part of the site and the diversion of seven arriving flights. The incident began at about 23:21 BST on Friday, 21 August 2026, and lasted around 15 minutes while police responded, secured the area and repaired a damaged section of perimeter fencing, according to an airport spokesperson.

As reported by the BBC, seven flights had to be diverted and 17 were held in the skies above Manchester Airport during the incident. Greater uk/police/">Manchester Police confirmed they were called to reports of a male found on the airside and said the situation appeared to be linked to mental health issues, with the man subsequently transported to hospital for evaluation.

Which flights were diverted and where did they land?

During the disruption, seven inbound flights destined for Manchester were rerouted to alternative airports while around 17 were placed in holding patterns, creating a knock-on effect on arrivals and causing widespread delays. As reported by the Manchester Evening News, among the diverted services were a TUI flight from Boa Vista in Cape Verde, which was sent to East Midlands Airport; a Ryanair flight from Agadir in Morocco, which was redirected to Birmingham; and an easyJet service from Barcelona, which was diverted to Liverpool.

Other affected flights included a Jet2 service from Zurich that was sent to Birmingham and a TUI flight from a Moroccan destination that was redirected to East Midlands, according to flight tracking data cited by local media. Several passengers reported being held in the air for extended periods before being diverted, with some describing multiple circuits over areas including Macclesfield and Buxton before landing at alternate airports.

How did passengers describe the disruption?

Passengers affected by the diversions and delays shared accounts of lengthy holds in the air, late-night landings at alternate airports and lengthy journeys home. Rai Hirst, from Bolton, told the Manchester Evening News he was returning from Marrakesh with his family on a TUI flight that landed at around 01:20, after circling for an extended period. He said: “We’ve since checked the final approach on FlightRadar and saw we were circling over Macclesfield and Buxton.”

Hirst added that while some passengers were frustrated, he praised airport and airline staff for their handling of the situation in the early hours.

“We were completely unaware of what had transpired, but the airport service was outstanding,”

he said.

“Learning this morning that it was due to someone experiencing difficulties puts everything in perspective—while we’re returning from a holiday, someone else is facing a serious challenge.”

Angela Slater, writing on the Manchester Evening News Facebook page, described being on the TUI flight from Cape Verde that diverted to East Midlands to refuel before returning to Manchester. She said the flight, due to land around 23:30, arrived at about 01:30, with passengers reaching home around 03:30. “The flight crew and captain were exceptional, keeping us informed as much as possible and managing a challenging situation effectively,” she said.

Other passengers took to social media to report being diverted to Liverpool and Birmingham. One X user, posting as @LUFCGAZ84, said: “We have been diverted to Liverpool after being held for a good half hour.” Another, @TheLifeOfJam, wrote from Birmingham Airport: “One person went onto the runway, and now we can’t fly home. We are stuck on the Birmingham Airport, and were meant [to] land at 11:30 PM at Manchester.”

What have authorities and the airport said?

Greater Manchester Police said they responded to notifications regarding a male found on the airside at Manchester Airport and indicated the incident appeared to be linked to mental health concerns. A force statement quoted by the BBC said:

“We reacted to notifications regarding a male who was found on the airside at Manchester Airport. This situation seems to be linked to mental health issues, and the man has been transported to a hospital for evaluation.”

A Manchester Airport spokesperson confirmed the airfield was closed for around 15 minutes while the incident was handled and the breach was repaired, resulting in seven diverted flights and 17 delayed flights. The airport said operations had returned to normal by Saturday morning after a temporary fix was implemented in response to the security breach. As reported by the Daily Record, flights have returned to normal this morning and a “temporary fix” has been put in place following the security breach.

Background to the security breach and airfield access

The incident centred on unauthorised access to the airside area of Manchester Airport, a secured zone that includes runways, taxiways and aprons where aircraft operate. According to statements from the airport and police, a man trespassed onto the airfield shortly before 23:30 BST on 21 August, prompting an immediate response from security and law enforcement. The airfield was closed for approximately 15 minutes while the individual was detained and a damaged section of perimeter fencing was addressed, the airport said.

Police indicated the episode appeared to be connected to mental health issues, and the man was taken to hospital for assessment rather than being held in police custody. The airport described the fix implemented overnight as temporary, suggesting further work may be required to address the underlying vulnerability that allowed the breach.

Predictions: how this development could affect travellers and local communities

For travellers using Manchester Airport, even short-lived airfield breaches can have outsized effects because arriving aircraft must be spaced safely and diversions create cascading delays across the network. In the immediate term, passengers on late-night and early-morning services should expect a higher risk of holds in the air, diversions to regional airports such as East Midlands, Birmingham, Liverpool and Leeds Bradford, and longer total journey times while airlines reposition aircraft and crews.

For Greater Manchester and surrounding regions, repeated or prolonged incidents of this kind could increase pressure on alternative airports used for diversions and on ground transport links as passengers are bussed back to Manchester or continue journeys from other hubs. For the airport operator, the episode is likely to prompt reviews of perimeter security, monitoring systems and response protocols, with potential implications for staffing, technology investment and coordination with police and mental health services. For local residents, the main impact is likely to be noise and traffic associated with diverted flights and additional ground movements while the airport works to clear backlogs and restore normal schedules.
