  • The midfielder attended the training sessions held at Carrington on Wednesday morning as reported on the Manchester United Official Website and Manchester Evening News.
  • Mainoo was out of the squad since Manchester United played 1-1 against Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on 10 October.
  • He could not attend Manchester United matches in the Champions League against Atletico Madrid and Como, and their league matches against Leeds United and Bournemouth.
  • Whether he will play against Chelsea in the upcoming Premier League match depends on Carrick’s opinion about Mainoo’s readiness to play after training sessions.
  • Michael Carrick continues to be Manchester United head coach despite some rumors about his position after the loss 3-0 to Bournemouth in home game.
  • Manchester United are now 16th in the Premier League table with one point more than the relegation zone and have only two wins out of 12 games in all competitions this season.
  • Bruno Fernandes, who did not start the game against Bournemouth, talked with Michael Carrick before the upcoming Chelsea match according to BBC Sport.

FC United of Manchester (Manchester Mirror) October 28, 2026 — Kobbie Mainoo has returned to Manchester United training, offering head coach Michael Carrick a timely midfield option before Saturday’s Premier League trip to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

As reported by the Manchester Evening News, Mainoo resumed full training after recovering from a minor injury setback. Manchester United’s official website also confirmed that the 21-year-old took part in Wednesday’s session at Carrington after missing the club’s previous four matches.

Mainoo’s return comes at a difficult moment for United. Carrick’s side were beaten 3-0 at home by Bournemouth on Sunday, a result that extended their winless run to eight matches and left them 16th in the Premier League, one point above the relegation zone.

Will Kobbie Mainoo Face Chelsea?

Mainoo is now in contention for the Chelsea match, but neither Manchester United nor Carrick has confirmed that he will start, be named among the substitutes, or be held back as a precaution.

Manchester United stated that Carrick is expected to provide further details when he speaks at his pre-match press conference on Thursday afternoon. The Manchester Evening News reported that the midfielder is expected to be fit to compete against Chelsea, while Yahoo Sports noted that his reaction to Wednesday’s session is likely to determine whether he starts, sits on the bench, or is rested.

As reported by Sam C, whose update was cited by Yahoo Sports and The Peoples Person, “The midfielder took part in Wednesday morning’s session at Carrington after missing United’s last four matches through injury.”

Mainoo last played in United’s 1-1 draw against Tottenham Hotspur on 10 October. He completed the full 90 minutes in that match, having earlier withdrawn from England duty during the October international break because of injury.

Why Was Mainoo Sidelined?

Mainoo sustained an unspecified injury during or after the Tottenham fixture. He subsequently missed United’s Champions League defeat at Atletico Madrid three days later and was absent for the Premier League meeting with Leeds United.

Carrick said on 20 October that Mainoo could require “another 10 days or so” before returning. The midfielder then missed the Champions League match against Como and Sunday’s league defeat by Bournemouth, extending his absence to four games.

The Evening Standard described the issue as a “miscellaneous muscle problem” and listed 31 October, the date of the Chelsea match, as a potential return date. Sports Mole similarly listed Chelsea as a possible return fixture, although it also noted 3 November, when United are scheduled to face Roma, as another possible return date.

What Does Mainoo’s Return Mean For Carrick?

Mainoo’s availability gives Carrick another central-midfield choice as United prepare for a match against Chelsea. In Mainoo’s absence, Carrick used Andrey Santos and Carlos Baleba in the pivot positions, while Youri Tielemans operated in a more advanced midfield role. That setup required captain Bruno Fernandes to play further forward.

The Manchester Evening News reported that Carrick has experimented with his midfield during Mainoo’s absence. The report also stated that Baleba has recently returned to full fitness following an ankle injury, giving the United manager additional options in the centre of the pitch.

Mainoo’s return could allow Carrick to restore a more familiar midfield balance. However, the club has not indicated whether the academy graduate is ready to start after a fortnight out, and any decision is likely to depend on how he responds to full training.

Is Michael Carrick Under Pressure?

Yes. Carrick remains under significant pressure after United’s poor run of results, although he will take charge of the Chelsea fixture.

Reuters reported on 27 October that Carrick remained in charge and led training at Carrington, giving the under-pressure manager and his players another opportunity to revive their season. BBC Sport reported that Carrick had been widely expected to be dismissed after the Bournemouth defeat, but that United’s board decided he deserved the opportunity to turn results around.

United have won only two of their 12 matches across all competitions this season, according to the Manchester Evening News. Those victories came against Ipswich Town and Sabah.

After the Bournemouth defeat, Carrick was asked about his future. As reported by AFP, he said: “What is next? I don’t know.” BBC Sport also quoted Carrick discussing the match, saying:

“The third goal, the fans were there waiting for us to get something in the game second half if we’d got one chance, one goal in the second half they would have been with us. We just couldn’t find that moment and that third goal is a killer moment.”

What Happened Between Carrick And Bruno Fernandes?

Carrick and United captain Bruno Fernandes have held private clear-the-air talks before the Chelsea trip, according to BBC Sport. Fernandes was an unused substitute in the 3-0 defeat by Bournemouth after being dropped following his criticism of Carrick’s tactics after United’s 4-1 Champions League loss to Como.

Sources told BBC Sport that the pair spoke privately at the club’s training ground on Tuesday, with the discussions intended to address issues between them. BBC Sport reported that Fernandes could return to the starting line-up at Stamford Bridge.

Fernandes’s potential return, alongside Mainoo’s recovery, would give Carrick more experienced options for a fixture United need to respond in after successive damaging defeats.

Who Else Is Injured For Manchester United?

Mainoo is not United’s only injury concern. Manchester United’s official website listed Marcus Rashford and Benjamin Šeško as sidelined, while the Manchester Evening News reported that Carrick continues to be without Luke Shaw, Marcus Rashford, Benjamin Šeško and Patrick Dorgu.

BBC Sport reported that Mainoo, Rashford, Šeško, Shaw and Manuel Ugarte all missed the Bournemouth match through injury. The club has not announced any suspensions for the Chelsea fixture.

Background Of The Development

Mainoo’s injury began after he featured for the full match in United’s 1-1 draw with Tottenham on 10 October. He had returned to the United side following his withdrawal from England’s Nations League squad during the international break.

His absence coincided with a worsening run of results. United lost 4-1 to Como in the Champions League and then suffered a 3-0 Premier League defeat at home to Bournemouth, with goals from Rayan, Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson securing victory for Marco Rose’s side.

The Bournemouth result prompted discussions within United’s leadership about Carrick’s position. Reuters reported that Carrick remained in charge on Tuesday and led training, while BBC Sport reported that the board decided to give him the chance to improve results.

Mainoo’s return therefore arrives as United prepare for a Chelsea side at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, with kick-off scheduled for 12:30 GMT.

Prediction: How Can This Affect Manchester United Fans?

For Manchester United supporters, Mainoo’s return could provide a practical boost to a midfield that has lacked stability during his absence. If he is fit enough to feature, he may give Carrick another option to improve ball progression, defensive balance and control in central areas.

However, supporters should not expect certainty over his involvement. With Mainoo returning after four matches out, United may choose a cautious approach, potentially using him from the bench before considering him for a start. Yahoo Sports and The Peoples Person both suggested that a substitute appearance could be the most likely route back if he suffers no reaction in training.

The wider effect for fans is that Mainoo’s availability may influence United’s chances of avoiding another defeat at Chelsea. A positive result would ease immediate pressure on Carrick and lift United away from the relegation places, while another loss would intensify scrutiny on the manager and the squad.
