Community-Led Organisations Event in Tower Hamlets

London, United Kingdom – Borderlines, an interdisciplinary research collective based at Queen Mary University of London (QMUL), will host “Community-Led Organisations and Inclusive Growth in Tower Hamlets,” a special event bringing together community leaders, academics, policymakers, practitioners, funders and local residents to explore how community-led action is creating a more inclusive future for the borough.

Taking place at The Common Room, Republic London, on July 17th, the event will celebrate the achievements of grassroots organisations that are transforming lives through community engagement, social inclusion and local leadership.

Community-led organisations are at the heart of Tower Hamlets, supporting residents, strengthening neighbourhood connections, creating opportunities and responding to local challenges. This event will provide a platform to recognise their contribution, share research insights and encourage meaningful conversations about how communities, universities, policymakers and funders can work together to advance inclusive growth.

The afternoon will begin with a community lunch hosted by Oitij-jo Kitchen, followed by keynote addresses from Maher Anjum, Co-founder of Oitij-jo, and Taryn Khanam BEM, Chief Executive Officer of BritBangla, who will share their experiences of building resilient and inclusive communities.

Researchers from Borderlines will present findings from the Borderlines Inclusive Growth Project, highlighting the experiences and impact of community-led organisations in East London. The presentation will feature Dr Mayra Ruiz-Castro, Director of Borderlines and Senior Lecturer at QMUL, alongside Dr Jinjing Fu, Dr Feride Kumbasar and Bente Fatema.

A panel discussion will explore how community organisations contribute to a more inclusive economy and society while examining opportunities for future collaboration between communities, universities and public institutions. The session will be chaired by Dr S M A Moin, Reader in Storytelling and Brand Communications at QMUL, with panellists representing Republic London, London Metropolitan University, Principle Six and QMUL’s School of Business and Management.

The event will conclude with an afternoon of exhibitions, creative workshops and cultural activities celebrating the diversity and creativity of Tower Hamlets. Visitors will have the opportunity to participate in an embroidery workshop, experience a henna workshop led by renowned artist Razia Sultana, enjoy a comedy performance by Shofa Miah, explore community artwork and textile exhibitions, and connect with organisations working across the borough.

Speaking ahead of the event, Dr Mayra Ruiz-Castro, Director of Borderlines, said:

“Community-led organisations possess invaluable knowledge, experience and leadership that are essential to building more inclusive communities. This event is an opportunity to raise their visibility, celebrate their achievements, share learning, and strengthen collaboration between communities, researchers, policymakers and businesses. We hope participants will leave inspired and committed to supporting inclusive growth across Tower Hamlets.”

To ensure broad participation, Borderlines is offering a limited number of bursaries to support attendees who may require assistance with travel, childcare, compensation for time away from work or other reasonable participation-related costs.

The event is open to everyone interested in community organising, research, public policy, funding and local development, and offers a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas, build partnerships and celebrate the contribution of community-led organisations to East London.
