According to Swim England’s event report, the competition produced seven British records, two European records and one World record. The World record remains subject to ratification. The governing body said the meet was staged in a fun, relaxed and supportive environment for the country’s masters swimming community.

Northern Wave Swimming Club, which represents Manchester’s LGBT+ swimming community, hosted the meet on Saturday, 8 August. The club welcomed swimmers from throughout the UK, with individual athletes and relay teams recording new benchmark times in several age-group categories.

What records were set at Manchester Masters Meet 2026?

Swim England reported that Alexander Smith set a British record in the men’s 35–39 years 100m Freestyle. Smith recorded 53.02 seconds in the event.

Alyson Fordham achieved two records in the women’s 70–74 years category. Swim England said she set a British and European record of 1:12.68 in the 100m Freestyle. Fordham also set a British record of 2:50.12 in the 200m Freestyle.

Colin Sage likewise set two British records in the men’s 90–94 years age group. His time of 2:10.66 in the 100m Backstroke established a new British mark, while his 5:35.40 in the 200m Breaststroke was also recorded as a British best.

Nicola Charlesworth set a British record of 2:28.18 in the women’s 40–44 years 200m Individual Medley, according to Swim England. Martin Bennell added another British record with 29.58 seconds in the men’s 45–49 years 50m Breaststroke.

These results accounted for seven of the British records recognised in Swim England’s report: Smith’s freestyle performance; Fordham’s two performances; Sage’s two performances; Charlesworth’s medley swim; and Bennell’s breaststroke result.

Which relay teams broke records in Manchester?

Three relay teams added to the record tally at the Manchester Masters Meet 2026.

Trafford Metro’s 200+ Open/Male 4x50m Freestyle Relay team set a British record of 1:43.31. The quartet comprised Craig Ward, Mark Cahill, Alec Johnson and Steve Barton.

Basingstoke Bluefins’ 200+ Mixed 4x50m Medley Relay team set British and European records with a time of 1:58.31. The team included Lizzie Coster, Martin Bennell, Spencer Turner and Fleur Turner.

Woking Swimming Club’s 160+ Mixed 4x50m Medley Relay team set British, European and World records in 1:53.16, Swim England reported. Michelle Ware, Henry Goodlud, Georgina Heyn and Alex Smith made up the team.

The Woking result is the World record referenced in the event report. Swim England stated that the World record was subject to ratification, meaning it requires formal confirmation through the relevant records process before being treated as an official final record.

How did swimmers take part beyond the record performances?

Swim England said the Manchester event included participation stories alongside the elite age-group performances.

One first-time competitor took to the starting block only 12 weeks after undergoing total knee replacement surgery. Swim England reported that competing at the meet allowed the swimmer to achieve a personal recovery goal. The report did not identify the competitor or state which race they entered.

Four water polo players from Manchester Sharks also switched disciplines for the day and entered the competition as a relay team. Their participation placed water polo athletes alongside specialist masters swimmers in the meet’s programme.

The report highlighted these examples as part of the wider atmosphere at the event, rather than as record performances. Masters competition is structured around age-group racing and provides opportunities for swimmers with different competitive backgrounds to take part.

What did swimmers say about Northern Wave’s event?

Swim England credited the officials and Northern Wave Swimming Club volunteers with helping to deliver the competition. The organisation described the workforce as a “superb team” of officials and volunteers.

The event report included feedback from one unnamed swimmer, who described the competition as “a great gala, very well organised and loved the music”.

Swim England did not provide a named author for the report or further attributed comments from individual swimmers, coaches or club representatives. Its published account focused on the results, the participation stories and the work of the event team.

What is the background to the Manchester Masters Meet?

Northern Wave Swimming Club hosted the Manchester Masters Meet for a second consecutive year in 2026. The club is part of Manchester’s LGBT+ swimming community and used Manchester Aquatics Centre as the venue for the competition.

The 2026 edition drew 269 swimmers from 80 clubs throughout the UK. Its 10 record performances included individual British records, relay British and European records, and the Woking Swimming Club team’s World-record swim, subject to formal ratification.

The meet combined competitive masters racing with participation from first-time competitors and athletes crossing over from water polo.

How could this affect masters swimmers and UK clubs?

For masters swimmers, the recorded performances provide new age-group targets in freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, individual medley and relay events. The results may also encourage clubs to enter more athletes and relay teams at future masters competitions.

For swimming clubs, the event demonstrates that teams from different parts of the UK can compete at a Manchester-based meet, with 80 clubs represented in 2026. Northern Wave’s second year as host may also strengthen the event’s visibility among LGBT+ swimmers and other adults looking for a supportive competition setting.

The effect on official record lists will depend on the ratification process for the reported World record. Swim England’s report specifically states that the Woking Swimming Club 160+ Mixed 4x50m Medley Relay World record is subject to ratification.
