Greater Manchester Police said its Force Contact, Crime and Operations Centre received a report shortly before 6pm on Friday, 2 October, concerning a suspicious vehicle travelling from Merseyside towards Greater Manchester.

The force said officers from its Transport Policing and Crime Command stopped the first vehicle at Eccles Interchange, where a search recovered about £100,000 in cash. A 51-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of money laundering and was being questioned in custody, according to reporting by Saiqa Chaudhari of the Lancashire Telegraph.

Further intelligence subsequently led officers to a second vehicle travelling into Greater Manchester, GMP said. Police searched that vehicle and reported finding approximately £60,000 in cash; a 37-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of money laundering and was also held for questioning.

How did police stop the vehicles?

Greater Manchester Police said its Force Contact, Crime and Operations Centre, known as FCCO, received the initial report shortly before 6pm on Friday, 2 October. The report concerned a vehicle described by police as suspicious and travelling east from Merseyside towards Greater Manchester.

The FCCO worked with officers on the ground to identify and stop the vehicle. GMP said its Transport Policing and Crime Command, abbreviated as TPACC, carried out the stop at Eccles Interchange, a motorway junction in the Salford area on the western edge of Greater Manchester.

According to the police account, officers searched the first vehicle after stopping it and located about £100,000 in cash. The amount cited in coverage is approximate, and the combined reported figure from the two vehicles is around £160,000, although GMP’s wider description was “over £150,000”.

The officers’ work did not end with the first stop. GMP said the FCCO received further intelligence which identified a second vehicle travelling into Greater Manchester, leading police to intercept and search that car as well.

Who has been arrested?

Police said a 51-year-old man was arrested after the search of the first vehicle. He was arrested on suspicion of money laundering and remained in custody for questioning at the time the force provided the information to the media.

A second suspect, a 37-year-old man, was arrested on suspicion of money laundering after police stopped and searched the second vehicle. He also remained in custody for questioning when the report was published.

Neither suspect has been named in the information released by Greater Manchester Police and reported by the Lancashire Telegraph. An arrest is not a charge, and the report did not state that either man had been charged or appeared in court.

The force has not publicly detailed the origin of the cash, its intended destination, whether the two vehicles were directly linked, or whether additional arrests or searches took place. Those matters may form part of the continuing investigation.

What did GMP say about the operation?

As reported by Saiqa Chaudhari of the Lancashire Telegraph, Roads Policing Sergeant Laura Abram described the incident as an example of collaboration between the force’s control-room operation and officers on the road.

Abram said the first vehicle was located and stopped within 20 minutes after intelligence was received by the FCCO. That timing indicates the report was assessed and acted on rapidly, although GMP did not provide a full timeline for the second vehicle stop.

The sergeant said GMP would not tolerate criminality on the streets, including driving offences, suspected money laundering and related alleged offences. She also urged members of the public to report concerns, saying public information helps police develop intelligence that can support interventions.

Her comments were issued in the context of the two vehicle searches and the cash seizure. They did not provide further details about the basis for the original suspicious-vehicle report or disclose the evidence officers may have gathered beyond the cash.

What does suspicion of money laundering mean?

Money laundering is generally the process of concealing or disguising money generated through criminal activity so that it appears to come from a legitimate source. In this case, GMP said both arrests were made on suspicion of money laundering; the force’s statement did not say that the cash had been proved to be criminal property.

The distinction is important because police investigations, decisions by prosecutors and any eventual court process determine whether criminal charges are brought and whether allegations are established. The information published so far concerns arrests and an ongoing police investigation, rather than convictions.

The cash seizure may be retained while officers examine the circumstances of the two stops and assess the available evidence. GMP has not announced any application to a court regarding forfeiture of the money.

Background

The operation involved GMP’s FCCO and its Transport Policing and Crime Command. The FCCO receives and coordinates reports and intelligence, while specialist officers can respond on the road network where vehicles are identified for intervention.

The incident began with a vehicle travelling from Merseyside towards Greater Manchester and developed into two police stops after additional intelligence was received. The first stop produced about £100,000, while the second produced about £60,000, according to the account attributed to Greater Manchester Police.

The reported total was therefore approximately £160,000. The original headline described the seizure as more than £150,000, while the two individual approximate amounts reported by the Lancashire Telegraph add up to about £160,000.

Prediction: How could this affect Greater Manchester road users?

For motorists and people travelling through Greater Manchester, the development may mean continued visible police activity at motorway junctions and on key routes where officers act on intelligence about suspected criminality.

For local residents, the case may encourage further reporting of suspicious activity to police, particularly because Sergeant Abram said information from the public helps build the intelligence picture used to identify vehicles and intervene.

For the two men arrested, the immediate effect is that they remain subject to a police investigation. Any longer-term legal consequences will depend on investigative findings, charging decisions and, if charges are brought, court proceedings.
