What is Destination Denton?
Tameside Council have recently introduced ‘Destination Denton’. This initiative encourages greener spaces, stronger transport systems and developments to the centre. Denton’s town centre currently has some electrifying plans scheduled, whilst having a budget of £16.8 million. The budget (which is funded by the UK Government Funding) helps to improve better cycle systems, public spaces and the town’s streets. This project started in March 2026 and at the moment it is still ongoing. By 2028, the council plans to actively enhance travel.
Will Tameside provide integrated transport systems?
In the next year, the rail has plans to connect to the Greater Manchester‘s Bee network. This will transform and elevate many individuals in the Tameside area, as it will become a transport hotspot in Greater Manchester. This will be the first unified transport system outside of London. Two towns in the Tameside, Ashton and Stalybridge, will be the first to experience the improvements. Both areas will benefit from the contactless system, where there will be better stations and connections from buses to trams.
The Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham has recently spoken about the upcoming transport advancements. Burnham stated
“These changes will make everyday journeys easier and open up new opportunities for people across Greater Manchester. I am excited for what the next twelve months will bring as we build a better, more connected future for us all.”
This will provide beneficial changes around the area. Initially, station enhancements will take place in Ashton and Stalybridge and this will involve the Bee Network. Easier payments and contactless payments will be utilised through the transport services.
The Leader of Tameside Council, Eleanor Wills has announced the exciting plans ahead. Wills positively declared
“Tameside is on the brink of a transport-led transformation that will drive economic growth and breathe new life into our town centres. Strategic developments in Ashton and Stalybridge, coupled with enhanced rail connections and future tram-train opportunities for Denton, will position us as one of the best-connected areas in the country.”
Has there been recent bus schedule improvements?
Night bus schedules have increased around local areas and this includes Tameside. This idea was suggested by Andy Burnham, as he intends to help the night-time economy. Burnham has also expressed his opinion on the current achievements made
“And now we’re acting visibly, tangibly in the interests of our residents with these changes that we’re bringing through.”
In 2023, eventually the public took control of the buses and was rebranded with the iconic yellow, Manchester Bee. The late-night buses are predicted to help thousands of people across the borough, in work opportunities and to improve social lives. Transport for Greater Manchester spoke on the subject saying
“740,000 people – roughly one in four of Greater Manchester’s population – would benefit from the planned changes.”
These plans are intended to join other areas of Greater Manchester more easily. The improved bus schedules are aimed to enhance transport connections, throughout the borough. Night buses are only one of the upcoming initiatives, to support areas like Tameside in travel.
Are there any more anticipated plans for Tameside?
Alongside the recent transport developments, other plans in Tameside are on the horizon. Five town centres in Tameside are scheduled for major and significant developments. Another addition to the development plans is increasing the amount of homes. Godley Green Garden Village is prepared to be a part of the 2,150-home plan. This is because it is pictured to be, the hotspot of evolution and change in eastern Greater Manchester. The aspiration of Godley Green Village is that it will be split in two halves and to include their own centres. In the village, there is scheduled to be more retail space, public and play areas.
Ashton is also a part of the regeneration plan, as the town centre will be heavily involved with this. New shelters are predicted to replace the old market. This will develop into a centre for entertainment and events. It is predicted to cost around £14.6 million, although there are other changes planned for the town. Adjacent to the town hall, food spaces are expected to be added and this will begin in summer.
Stalybridge is participating in Tameside’s regeneration scheme. The Civic Hall roof repairs have been taken place, however internal work is still ongoing. Presently, there are proposals to advance the Astley Cheetham Art Gallery & Library and to include a new lift. These two buildings are the beacon of Ashton’s evolution. Additionally, there are intentions to improve the presentation of the public square by adding more trees and green spaces. This renovation is expected to be completed by Spring 2027, even though there are plans for a new cycle and pedestrian bridge.
Denton is prepared to be a greener and safer place in Tameside. With a budget of £16.8 million, this will involve reparations to the Festive Hall and the iconic town hall. The historic Queen Street is anticipated to be greener and improve in landscape, contributing to Denton’s newer image.
Droylsden has waited years for change and adaptation. Many residents of the area have felt disregarded and left behind, in comparison to neighbouring towns. However in spring 2025, a plan to evolve the town was finally agreed on. The known Concord Suite building is expected to transform due to Tameside’s regeneration plan. Alongside this, road improvements are planned for the A662 and another part of this will advocate for walking and cycling. Near the Tesco and Droylsden Shopping Centre, a new centre park and functioning travel route will be constructed close to the canal. This will enhance transport and accessibility for inhabitants in Droylsden.
Hyde is envisioned to have a unique transformation. The plan will evoque change to the town hall, Clarendon Shopping Centre and improvements to other public spaces. In the preparations of the regeneration to the shopping centre, it is expected to be replaced by an active indoor market. The plans were announced in 2024, however there has been little progress made to implement this recently.
Hattersley is involved with the ‘Pride in Place programme’ , where it advocates a stronger and flourishing community. With a £20 million budget, the local community is in charge of how it is spent and the differences it will make. This is an exciting change to Hattersley’s residents.
What does this news mean for Tameside?
Overall, in the last few months upcoming plans are scheduled to improve the area. From transport to regeneration, this will not only benefit local Tameside residents but Greater Manchester as a whole.
