New photographs from the scene showed extensive structural damage, including collapsed sections of the building, scattered bricks and debris, and a large area sealed behind emergency-service cordons.

The fire began at approximately 1.40am on Thursday, August 6, at the commercial property near Hilton Street. Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said the building was already “well alight” when crews arrived. Eight fire engines attended, supported by specialist equipment including a turntable ladder, the Scorpion appliance from Salford and a high-volume pump from Cheadle.

Greater Manchester Police closed Bury New Road while firefighters worked to control the incident and make the area safe. Residents living near the scene were advised to stay away from the affected area and keep doors and windows shut because of the smoke.

What happened at the Marc Darcy showroom?

The fire tore through the Marc Darcy retail outlet and warehouse at 271–291 Bury New Road. The property, which serves as the brand’s Salford showroom and headquarters, was engulfed by flames during the early hours of Thursday morning.

Images and videos from the scene showed fire coming through the building and thick smoke spreading across the surrounding area. The Manchester Evening News reported that the fire reached a size of approximately 50 metres by 50 metres at its peak.

Carl Haslam, a station commander with Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, shared footage from the operation and said crews had been working throughout the night to tackle the blaze. Firefighters used two jets, a turntable ladder and the Scorpion appliance as part of the response.

The fire caused significant damage to the commercial building. According to the Manchester Evening News gallery report, much of the structure had been reduced to rubble by Friday morning. A substantial part of the building’s framework had collapsed, leaving bricks and other debris inside the cordoned-off site.

The damage means the building cannot currently operate as normal. Marc Darcy stated on its website that it was temporarily unable to accept new orders because of the fire. The company apologised for the disruption and said it would resume order processing as soon as possible.

How did emergency services respond?

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service received reports of the fire at around 1.40am. According to a statement attributed to the service by the Manchester Evening News, appliances from Moss Side, Manchester Central, Salford, Broughton, Philips Park and Blackley fire stations attended the incident.

Specialist resources from Salford, Cheadle and Whitehill were also deployed. The response included eight fire engines, the Scorpion from Salford, a high-volume pump from Cheadle and a turntable ladder from Whitehill fire station.

The equipment was used to reach and suppress flames across the large commercial premises. A GMFRS spokesperson said crews remained at the site while continuing to extinguish the fire and make the area safe.

The same statement warned residents to avoid the location, keep doors and windows closed, and take account of the road closure imposed by Greater Manchester Police.

Firefighters continued working on Friday, the second day of the incident. The Manchester Evening News reported that teams were dealing with hotspots inside the damaged building. Their continued presence indicated that the incident had moved beyond the initial firefighting operation but that parts of the structure still required attention.

The road closure formed part of the wider safety operation. Bury New Road remained closed around the junctions with Upper Camp Street and Fenney Street as emergency crews continued their work.

What did local residents report hearing?

Residents in nearby estates, including areas around Bradshaw Street and Appian Way, described being woken by loud noises and activity in the early hours.

The Manchester Evening News reported that some residents heard what they described as two loud bangs before the fire became fully visible.

Shannon Ward, quoted by the Manchester Evening News, said the incident began with a loud bang that sounded like a gunshot. She said she had been awake with family while firefighters gradually brought the flames under control from the nearby neighbourhood.

Another resident, identified by the Manchester Evening News as Erin, aged 28, described hearing small popping sounds followed by commotion in the street. She said she noticed a black cloud of smoke after going outside and later saw flames and glowing material from her position overlooking the showroom.

The report also described concerns among residents as the fire grew. One resident said police instructed people to move further back from the scene and expressed concern about nearby homes and a taxi parked close to the affected area.

The resident also described what appeared to be electrical sparks and lampposts flashing on and off.

Those accounts describe what witnesses experienced but do not establish how the fire started. The cause had not been confirmed in the reports available on Friday, August 7. The Manchester Evening News said Greater Manchester Police had been contacted for further information.

How has the fire affected Bury New Road?

Bury New Road was closed for much of Thursday while firefighters battled the blaze. The route is an important road in the Salford and Manchester area, and its closure affected movement around the scene.

Emergency services maintained a perimeter to protect the public while crews dealt with the damaged building and remaining hotspots.

The Manchester Evening News reported that adjacent businesses, including fast-food outlets such as Tim Hortons, remained open during the operation. Spectators gathered in a nearby car park to watch the emergency response, although residents and members of the public were told to keep away from the cordoned-off area.

The combination of a collapsed structure, debris and continuing hotspots meant that the site required controlled access. The closure also allowed fire crews and specialist vehicles to operate without normal traffic passing close to the building.

Residents were specifically advised to keep windows and doors closed because of heavy smoke. The instruction applied while the fire was active and while firefighters continued to deal with the remaining hotspots.

What has Marc Darcy said about the incident?

Marc Darcy published an online notice confirming that a fire had occurred at its premises. The company said it was temporarily unable to accept new orders and apologised for the inconvenience.

It added that ordering would reopen as soon as possible.

The showroom at 271–291 Bury New Road is described by the company as its headquarters in Salford and the physical location where customers can view the brand’s full collection of suits.

The fire therefore affected not only a retail outlet but also a site associated with the company’s wider operations. However, the available reports did not confirm the extent of damage to stock, offices, deliveries or other business facilities.

The company had also not announced a timetable for reopening the showroom or restoring normal online order processing.

What is known about the cause of the fire?

The cause of the fire remains unconfirmed. Residents reported loud bangs, popping sounds and possible electrical sparks, but those observations do not amount to an official explanation.

No conclusion about the origin of the fire had been provided by Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service or Greater Manchester Police in the reports available on August 7.

The Manchester Evening News reported that Greater Manchester Police had been contacted for further information. Until emergency services or investigators release verified findings, it is not possible to say whether the fire was accidental, electrical, deliberate or linked to any other cause.

The evidence currently established is limited to the time and location of the incident, the scale of the emergency response, the building’s condition when crews arrived and the continuing work to make the site safe.

Any later assessment would depend on examination of the damaged premises and information released by the relevant authorities.

What is the background to the development?

Marc Darcy operates a formal-wear and menswear business from its Salford headquarters and showroom on Bury New Road.

The company’s store information identifies the premises at 271–291 Bury New Road, Salford, Greater Manchester, and describes the showroom as the location where its full range of suits can be viewed in person.

The fire occurred at a commercial property near Hilton Street during the early hours of August 6. Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service classified the incident as a major building fire requiring eight fire engines and specialist equipment.

The property’s reported footprint of roughly 50 metres by 50 metres helps explain the scale of the response and the need for continued firefighting operations after the initial blaze was brought under control.

The development also follows a pattern common to serious commercial fires: an initial emergency response, restrictions on nearby roads, public safety advice concerning smoke and a later phase in which crews inspect the structure and extinguish hidden hotspots.

In this case, photographs published the following day showed that the building had suffered extensive collapse and that police and fire-service cordons remained in place.

How could the fire affect local residents and customers?

For local residents, the immediate effects are likely to include continued disruption around Bury New Road, restricted access near the showroom and possible smoke or debris hazards while firefighters and investigators remain on site.

People living nearby should follow instructions issued by Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service, Greater Manchester Police and local authorities rather than entering the cordoned area.

The reported road closure and safety advice are directly linked to the building’s unstable condition and continuing firefighting work.

For motorists and public-transport users, the closure may require alternative routes until emergency services confirm that the road is safe to reopen. The duration of any further disruption cannot be predicted from the available reports because it will depend on structural assessments, the removal of debris and the investigation into the cause of the fire.

For Marc Darcy customers, the most immediate commercial effect is the temporary suspension of new orders. Customers with existing or planned purchases may need to wait for further information from the company about stock, deliveries, refunds, appointments and the reopening of its ordering system.

The company has not yet provided a full operational update on those matters.

For the wider local business community, the incident may temporarily reduce footfall and access around the affected stretch of Bury New Road. Businesses that remain open nearby could face changes in customer access while the police and fire-service perimeter stays in place.

The longer-term effect will depend on how quickly the site can be secured and whether surrounding roads and businesses can return to normal operations.
