As reported by Usma Raja of Oldham Reporter, Greater Manchester Police were called to reports of the fire at 2.23pm on Monday, 2 November 2026. A GMP spokesperson said: “At 2.23pm on Monday 2nd November, GMP were called to reports of a fire at a property on Bell Street, in Oldham.”

The force added that emergency services attended and that, despite their best efforts, a person was pronounced deceased at the scene. It confirmed that the person’s next of kin had been notified.

GMFRS said it received the call at 2.20pm and sent six fire engines and two aerial ladder platforms to what it described as a large fire at a commercial building on Bell Street.

How did firefighters respond?

As reported by Oldham Reporter, a GMFRS spokesperson said crews arrived quickly and firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used hose reels and specialist equipment to extinguish the flames and dampen down hot spots.

The service said:

“Sadly one person died in the incident despite the best efforts of emergency workers. Crews remain on the scene whilst an investigation into the cause of the fire takes place.”

Manchester Evening News reported that GMFRS advised nearby residents to keep their windows and doors shut while crews dealt with the blaze. The outlet also reported that North West Ambulance Service personnel were present at the scene.

The Oldham Times later reported that firefighters worked alongside GMP and the North West Ambulance Service to make the area safe. It said safety cordons were in place because of concerns about the structural stability of the damaged building.

Was the death treated as suspicious?

No. Greater Manchester Police said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and confirmed that no arrests had been made.

As reported by The Oldham Times, GMP stated that the man’s death was not being treated as suspicious. The newspaper reported that police confirmed a man died as a result of the fire.

Manchester Evening News likewise reported that the individual was declared dead at the site, that his family had been notified, and that authorities were not treating the death as suspicious.

What did witnesses see?

Video footage shared on social media showed the scale of the fire, with smoke billowing across the area, according to Oldham Reporter.

Manchester Evening News reported that the fire prompted a significant emergency response and that people were urged to avoid the area where possible.

The Oldham Times reported that the blaze sent smoke across the borough and that firefighters remained at the scene the following morning as they continued to make the area safe.

Is the cause of the fire known?

The cause had not been publicly confirmed at the time of the latest reports. GMFRS said crews remained at the scene while an investigation into the cause of the fire was carried out.

Neither GMP nor GMFRS has named the man who died, and the available reports do not identify him or give his age.

The Oldham Times reported that GMFRS issued a statement on Tuesday, 3 November, saying it remained at the scene working to make the area safe.

Background of the development

Bell Street is in Oldham town centre, and the incident involved a commercial property rather than a residential address. The fire began at around 2.20pm on Monday, 2 November, and drew a large emergency-service presence, including six fire engines and two aerial ladder platforms.

The response also involved Greater Manchester Police and the North West Ambulance Service. Authorities placed cordons around the site because of concerns about the structural stability of the damaged building, while residents nearby were told to keep windows and doors closed due to smoke.

The death was confirmed after the initial firefighting operation, with GMP announcing that the man had been pronounced dead at the scene and that his relatives had been informed. Police said the case was not being treated as suspicious, while GMFRS continued its investigation into how the fire started.

Prediction: How this may affect local residents and businesses

For people living and working near Bell Street, the immediate effect is likely to concern safety, access and disruption. Cordons and an ongoing fire investigation may keep parts of the area restricted while structural checks and investigations continue, affecting footfall for nearby shops and businesses.

Residents may remain cautious about smoke, air quality and building safety until GMFRS completes its investigation and confirms that the site is safe. The advice to keep windows and doors closed during the response reflected those concerns.

For local commercial-property owners, the incident may prompt renewed attention to fire-risk assessments, escape routes, alarm systems and structural safety. The confirmed death and the ongoing investigation are also likely to keep community attention focused on Bell Street until officials provide a further update on the cause.
