Key Points

  • A mandatory face-mask policy has been temporarily implemented by Royal Bolton Hospital from Friday 30 October 2026.
  • It is compulsory for everyone who enters inpatient departments, such as wards in the hospital, to wear fluid-resistant surgical masks.
  • This move will help in limiting the transmission of flu, COVID-19, and other illnesses that are commonly associated with the season.
  • According to reports provided by the Bolton NHS Foundation Trust, there were 210 positive tests among patients suffering from either flu or COVID-19 at the end of October, which was up from 51 on average per month in September.
  • It came after a surge in the number of individuals visiting the Emergency Department with respiratory conditions.
  • Facemasks will be available at all points within the hospital and the trust has encouraged individuals to wear them properly and dispose of them.
  • Every front-line NHS employee working at the hospital has been offered the seasonal flu vaccine.

Bolton (Manchester Mirror) October 30, 2026 — Royal Bolton Hospital has made face masks mandatory in patient areas from today, as Bolton NHS Foundation Trust responds to a sharp rise in flu and COVID-19 cases.

As reported by the Manchester Evening News, the hospital said the temporary measure is intended to protect patients, visitors and healthcare staff during the winter illness period. From Friday, 30 October, everyone entering inpatient zones, including hospital wards, is expected to wear a fluid-resistant surgical mask.

The rule applies to staff, patients and visitors. The hospital said masks will be available throughout the site and has asked people to ensure the mask covers both the nose and mouth, remains secure while speaking, and is disposed of after use rather than reused.

What Did Bolton NHS Foundation Trust Say?

Bolton NHS Foundation Trust said the decision follows a significant increase in patients attending the Emergency Department with respiratory symptoms. As reported by The Bolton News, the trust recorded 210 positive patient tests for COVID-19 or flu across the hospital at the end of October, compared with an average of 51 during September.

The trust’s chief officer, Tyrone, said the hospital was seeing a significant number of flu cases and that practical measures were needed to reduce infection risk.

As reported by the Manchester Evening News, Tyrone said:

“We are currently observing a significant number of flu cases within our hospital, making it crucial to implement prudent measures to lower the risk of infection and ensure the safety of our patients, visitors, and colleagues. For some individuals, influenza can pose serious health risks.”

He added:

“By donning face masks in patient areas, everyone can contribute to minimising the transmission of flu and other seasonal viruses. We greatly value the cooperation and understanding of our patients and visitors as we roll out this temporary protocol.”

Which Areas Are Covered by the Mask Rule?

The requirement covers inpatient areas at Royal Bolton Hospital, including hospital wards. The trust has described the measure as temporary and focused on patient-facing settings rather than the entire hospital estate.

According to The Bolton News, staff, patients and visitors will be asked to wear a fluid-resistant surgical face mask when entering those areas. The hospital has not announced a fixed end date, saying instead that it will keep the requirement under regular review.

The trust said it would continue to monitor infection levels closely and reassess the necessity of the rule over the coming days.

How Is the Hospital Supporting Staff and Visitors?

Alongside the mask requirement, Bolton NHS Foundation Trust confirmed that all frontline NHS personnel have been provided with the seasonal flu vaccine. The hospital said this is intended to strengthen protection for staff, their colleagues and the patients they care for.

The trust has also previously asked visitors not to attend if they feel unwell, particularly if they have symptoms of respiratory illnesses such as COVID-19 or flu, sickness and diarrhoea, or other infections. Its patient and visitor guidance also asks people to clean their hands when entering buildings, especially before visiting wards or clinical areas.

Face masks are being made available throughout Royal Bolton Hospital, and the trust has set out practical instructions for their correct use.

What Happens Next at Royal Bolton Hospital?

The hospital says the mask rule will remain in place while infection levels are assessed. Bolton NHS Foundation Trust has committed to reviewing the requirement regularly over the next few days, meaning the policy could either continue, be adjusted or be lifted depending on the number of respiratory infections in the hospital.

The measure comes as hospitals across the UK have previously used temporary mask requirements during periods of increased flu and COVID-19 activity. The BBC reported in December 2025 that Salisbury District Hospital and Great Western Hospital in Wiltshire had introduced face-covering requirements in emergency and assessment areas amid rising flu infections.

Background of the Development

Royal Bolton Hospital is run by Bolton NHS Foundation Trust, which serves patients in Bolton and surrounding areas. The trust’s published guidance for patients and visitors already encourages basic infection-control precautions, including avoiding visits when unwell and cleaning hands before entering clinical areas.

The latest mask requirement follows a clear seasonal rise in respiratory illness. The trust reported 210 positive COVID-19 or flu tests at the end of October, against a September average of 51, according to The Bolton News. The hospital says the new rule is a temporary infection-prevention step rather than a permanent change to visiting arrangements.

Prediction: How Could This Affect Patients and Visitors?

For patients and visitors in Bolton, the immediate effect is likely to be a change to routine hospital visits: people entering wards and other inpatient areas should expect to wear a surgical mask, collect one on site if needed and follow the hospital’s instructions on correct disposal.

If infection levels continue to rise, the trust may maintain the requirement for longer or extend infection-control precautions. Conversely, if COVID-19 and flu cases fall, the hospital has indicated that it will review and potentially relax the rule.

For vulnerable patients, the measure may reduce exposure to respiratory viruses in wards, where people may be at higher risk of severe illness. For visitors, the main practical impact is the need to plan for mask-wearing and to avoid attending while experiencing respiratory symptoms, in line with the trust’s existing guidance.
