Rochdale Crime (Manchester Mirror) July 28, 2026 – A man has been jailed for two years after entering school grounds armed with a knife, hammer and hatchet. Both Douk Deng, 21, was disarmed by local response officers after a school staff member at Edgar Wood Academy called Greater uk/police/">Manchester Police to report a suspicious man on school grounds on August 6, 2025. Officers detained him after finding him with a seven-inch kitchen knife, a hammer, and a hatchet, along with a jerry can containing half a litre of petrol. The incident took place during the summer break and no pupils were in the school, but there were contractors working on the grounds. Deng, of Taylor Street in Heywood, was swiftly questioned, charged, and then admitted to the offences in court later that same week. He has now been sentenced to two years in prison at Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court.google+4

Who is Both Douk Deng and what charges did he face?

Both Douk Deng, a 21-year-old South Sudanese national, pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to seven charges. These include two counts of possessing an offensive weapon in a public place, possessing an offensive weapon on school premises, possession of a bladed article on school premises, two counts of criminal damage, and having an article with intent to destroy or damage property. As reported by the Manchester Evening News, Deng had applied for and been denied asylum three times, and became “increasingly exasperated” as immigration officials failed to assist him in his efforts to remain and work in the UK.

Deng, who has a wife and child, was placed in shared accommodation upon his arrival in the UK. His defence attorney, Sara Haque, told the court he had “very limited English” and felt frustrated that “no-one was listening to him and no-one was helping him”. She stated:

“He felt he had reached the limit of his ability to cope within the HMO where others in similar circumstances to him had been assisted by the immigration authorities. He became increasingly frustrated that the same was not happening for him. His only wish is to work and find money to support his family.”

What did prosecution and defence claim about Deng’s intentions?

Brian Berlyne, prosecuting, told Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court: “It’s the Crown’s case that he must have intended to set fire to the school premises.” Prosecutors believe Deng intended to set the building on fire, noting that a workman had spotted him carrying a petrol can with a hammer tucked in the belt of his trousers.

However, the defence presented a different account. As reported by Sara Haque of the Manchester Evening News, Deng maintained he did not have any desire to injure or hurt anyone, and there was no evidence he threatened any individual. She said:

“This was a bizarre and compulsive act lacking in any type of maturity at a time when he was in deep distress having left Sudan and his family in traumatic circumstances. He wanted attention and he was in crisis but he was not motivated by hostility towards children, teachers or the wider public.”

Psychiatric evaluations of Deng did not reveal any significant mental health concerns, the court was told. Deng was informed that he must serve up to half of his sentence in custody, with the remainder on licence.

What occurred the day before the Edgar Wood Academy incident?

A day before the Edgar Wood incident, Deng had been spotted “acting oddly” at Holy Family RC and CE College in Rochdale. As reported by GB News, there he kicked and damaged its intercom system, though the school had already closed for the summer. This earlier incident formed part of the criminal damage charges to which he later pleaded guilty.

What did the judge and police say about the case?

Judge Bernadette Baxter addressed Deng during sentencing, remarking:

“I have no power to order the Home Office to do anything. But in my judgment, given your circumstances as a failed asylum seeker who has been in custody for the best part of a year, the Home Office should be doing something rather than nothing to deal with your status in this country.”

Chief Superintendent Helen Caldbeck, District Commander for Rochdale, praised the police response. As reported by the Rochdale Times, she said:

“I’m incredibly proud of the officers’ response to this incident. They were professional and brave in tackling a suspicious man armed with weapons and immediately confronted Deng, to keep the public safe. We have thoroughly investigated Deng and cannot find a clear indication of his motive or intention that day. Thankfully no one was close to coming to harm, but this was nevertheless a disturbing incident.”

Detectives from Rochdale CID thoroughly investigated Deng, including examining his mobile phone, and found no evidence of a particular motive or intent. Police have been in contact with the school to keep them updated and there have been no similar reports or concerns raised since the incident.

Background of the development

This case highlights ongoing challenges surrounding the UK asylum system and the treatment of failed asylum seekers. Deng’s frustration with his immigration status, as described in court, reflects broader concerns about prolonged uncertainty faced by individuals awaiting decisions on their asylum applications. The incident occurred against a backdrop of increased scrutiny of school security following various weapons-related incidents at educational institutions across the UK in recent years. The fact that both schools were closed for summer holidays meant no pupils were present, though contractors were working on the Edgar Wood Academy grounds at the time.

Prediction: How this development can affect school communities and local residents

This incident is likely to prompt increased security measures at schools across Greater Manchester, particularly during holiday periods when buildings may be less supervised. School governors and local authorities may review existing security protocols, including access controls, perimeter fencing, and monitoring systems. The case may also influence how local communities perceive school safety, potentially leading to greater vigilance among residents and contractors working near educational facilities. For asylum seekers and immigration support services, the case underscores the importance of addressing mental health and integration support for individuals in prolonged uncertainty, as unaddressed distress can escalate into public safety incidents. Local police forces may increase patrols around schools during non-term time, while immigration authorities could face renewed pressure to process cases more efficiently to prevent similar situations arising from frustration and despair.
