Key Points

  • Babatunde Odutola, 36, an offender who had registered as having committed a sexual crime and who had no fixed place of abode, picked on a woman travelling alone in a train moving through Cheshire en route to Manchester Piccadilly on the evening of Friday 11 September 2026.
  • From his wheelchair, he exposed himself and masturbated in front of the woman, telling her to “come over,” reported British Transport Police (BTP).
  • The victim was escorted off the train by another passenger, while Odutola continued in his actions as other passengers moved past him, according to CCTV footage.
  • He was apprehended on arrival of the train at Manchester Piccadilly railway station.
  • On Monday 14 September, at Manchester Magistrates’ Court, he pleaded guilty to the charge of outraging public decency and breach of a suspended sentence for exposure in Runcorn on three occasions in July.
  • The judge jailed him immediately for 44 weeks.
  • DC Leonidas Christoforou of BTP described Odutola as “incredibly dangerous” and stated that such behavior would never be tolerated by the police on Britain’s railways.

Manchester Crime (Manchester Mirror) September 17, 2026 – A man who carried out a sexual act in front of a woman on a train has been jailed within 72 hours after a rapid British Transport Police investigation and court process.

According to BTP, the incident occurred at about 7pm on Friday 11 September aboard a service travelling through Cheshire towards Manchester Piccadilly. Babatunde Odutola, 36, approached a woman who was travelling alone, looked her “up and down” in an intimidating manner and acted aggressively when she did not engage with him, the court heard.

Odutola, who was seated in a wheelchair, then exposed himself and began to masturbate while looking at the victim and telling her to “come over”, BTP said. The woman was distressed and was escorted out of the carriage by another passenger. CCTV footage later showed Odutola continuing the act as other passengers walked through the carriage, apparently undeterred.

British Transport Police were alerted and officers arrested Odutola when the train arrived at Manchester Piccadilly.

How quickly was the offender brought to justice?

Odutola was sentenced on Monday 14 September at Manchester Magistrates’ Court, within 72 hours of the offence. He pleaded guilty to one count of performing an act outraging public decency and to breaching a suspended sentence order.

The suspended sentence related to three counts of exposure committed over three days in July in Runcorn, for which he had previously been given a suspended term, the court was told. On this occasion, he was jailed for 44 weeks, to be served immediately.

What did British Transport Police say about the case?

DC Leonidas Christoforou, of British Transport Police, said Odutola was “clearly an incredibly dangerous individual” and that his behaviour must have been “terrifying” for the victim, whom he singled out while she was travelling alone.

As reported by staff at British Transport Police, DC Christoforou stated that Odutola “has shown little remorse for his actions and denied the allegations against him during his police interview”. He added that “a stack of incriminating evidence, including damning CCTV and several witness accounts, left him with little choice but to plead guilty when he appeared in court”.

The detective said: “This was not a one-off from Odutola, who was already a registered sex offender, and this type of alarming, predatory behaviour simply will not be tolerated on our railways.” He urged anyone who experiences or witnesses such crimes on the railway to report them by texting 61016, saying BTP “will always take action”.

What charges were brought and what sentence was imposed?

Odutola, of no fixed address, admitted outraging public decency and breaching a suspended sentence order. Manchester Magistrates’ Court sentenced him to 44 weeks’ immediate imprisonment.

The breach of the suspended sentence order arose from three exposure offences in Runcorn in July, which had previously resulted in a suspended term, the court heard.

How was evidence gathered and used in court?

British Transport Police said the investigation moved quickly after the arrest at Manchester Piccadilly. CCTV from the train showed Odutola continuing the sex act as passengers passed through the carriage, and witness accounts supported the victim’s version of events.

DC Christoforou said the combination of video evidence and testimonies meant Odutola had “little choice but to plead guilty” despite initially denying allegations in police interview, according to BTP’s statement.

What wider context surrounds this incident on the railway?

The case comes amid continued focus by British Transport Police on sexual offences and anti-social behaviour on trains and stations. The force has repeatedly highlighted the use of CCTV, rapid deployment of officers and text reporting via 61016 to tackle offences on the network.

Odutola was already a registered sex offender before this incident, BTP said, underlining concerns about repeat offending and the risk posed to lone travellers.

Background to the development

This case follows a pattern of high-profile British Transport Police operations targeting sexual offences on railways, with several recent arrests and convictions reported across the North West and beyond. The force has emphasised that offenders who commit exposure and public decency offences on trains will face swift investigation and prosecution where evidence allows.

Odutola’s prior suspended sentence for three exposure offences in Runcorn in July placed him under court supervision before the 11 September incident, according to court details reported by local titles. The breach of that order formed part of the sentencing considerations that led to immediate custody.

Prediction: how this could affect rail passengers and policy

The rapid arrest and 44-week sentence in this case is likely to reinforce messages to rail passengers that sexual offences on trains will be pursued aggressively, potentially increasing public confidence in reporting such incidents. For lone travellers, particularly women, the visibility of CCTV-based investigations and quick court outcomes may act as both a deterrent to offenders and an encouragement to victims and witnesses to come forward.

For British Transport Police and the courts, the 72-hour timeline from offence to custody could set an operational benchmark for similar cases, prompting closer coordination between frontline officers, CCTV analysts and magistrates’ courts in Greater Manchester and other regions. If replicated, such speed may reduce the window in which repeat offenders can commit further acts while on bail or under suspended sentences, thereby affecting sentencing practice and risk management for registered sex offenders using the railway network.
