How many people attended Tameside’s summer events in 2026?

As reported by the Tameside Reporter, more than 13,000 people made use of the council’s summer programme, which included a “ginormous sandpit”, arts and crafts by the river, and theatre performances in the park. The attendance figure covers a mix of one-off events and ongoing sessions delivered across multiple venues in the borough.

What activities were included in Tameside’s summer programme?

Tameside Council offered a varied array of free and low-cost activities, events and sessions throughout the school holidays for residents and visitors to enjoy, with programming spread across parks, libraries, Family Hubs, Portland Basin Museum, Stalybridge Victoria Market Hall and Ashton Town Centre. The much-loved Theatre in the Park sessions, often with sell-out shows, brought in around 1,400 visitors over the course of eight shows. Outdoor Arts sessions offered screen-free fun, including crafts and music, out in nature.

A record number of 1,875 attended this year’s ‘Our Museum Day’, which brought together crafts, heritage, dance and family activities at Portland Basin Museum. Tameside Libraries hosted 36 events celebrating the Children’s Summer Reading Challenge, Read to the Beat, with highlights including puppet and bee drum workshops, silent discos, hip hop DJ experiences, family music-making sessions, storytelling events, film screenings and preschool Mini Challenge story times.

The library events attracted more than 1,300 children and 1,000 adults, while five pop-up library events in local parks helped promote the Summer Reading Challenge and encourage children to keep reading over the summer. More than 1,700 children have signed up for the Summer Reading Challenge. Family Hubs welcomed over 1,000 children to their sessions too, including Story Walks, Wellies in the Wood, and other activities.

Who commented on the success of Tameside’s summer events?

Tameside Council’s Executive Member for Culture and Lifelong Learning, Cllr Leanne Feeley, said:

“It’s wonderful to hear how much residents and visitors enjoyed this year’s summer programme. We know keeping children entertained throughout the six-week holiday can be a challenge for many families, so it’s fantastic to see so many people taking part in the activities, sessions and events on offer.”

She added:

“Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make the programme such a success. Keep an eye out as our teams continue to work on events and activities for the rest of the year!”

Where did Tameside’s summer events take place?

Events took place across Tameside’s parks, libraries, Family Hubs, Portland Basin Museum, Stalybridge Victoria Market Hall and Ashton Town Centre. The spread of venues allowed the council to reach different communities across the borough, from Mossley and Stalybridge to Ashton-under-Lyne and Droylsden, using both indoor and outdoor spaces.

Background of the development

Tameside Council has run summer holiday programmes in previous years, but the 2026 edition appears to have expanded the range of activities and venues, with a particular emphasis on free and low-cost options for families. The inclusion of Theatre in the Park, Outdoor Arts sessions, a large-scale sandpit, and museum-based heritage days reflects a strategy to blend entertainment with cultural engagement. The Summer Reading Challenge, coordinated through Tameside Libraries, forms part of a national initiative to encourage children to read during the holidays, with local events tailored to the theme Read to the Beat. Family Hubs, which provide support and activities for parents and children, also contributed to the overall attendance figure with more than 1,000 children taking part in their sessions.

Prediction: how could this development affect Tameside residents?

The strong turnout for Tameside’s 2026 summer events suggests continued demand for accessible, local cultural programming, particularly among families seeking affordable activities during school holidays. If the council maintains or expands this model, residents could benefit from more frequent year-round events, improved use of public spaces such as parks and libraries, and greater participation in arts and heritage activities. For children, regular access to creative workshops, reading challenges and outdoor play may support literacy, social skills and wellbeing, while parents and carers gain reliable, low-cost options for keeping children engaged. For local venues such as Portland Basin Museum, Stalybridge Victoria Market Hall and Ashton town centre, sustained footfall from such events could support longer-term plans to increase visitor numbers and strengthen community ties.
