Premier League Trials Rule to Stop Goalkeeper Time Wasting

The Premier League is set to trial a new rule in prevention of goalkeepers going down injured to tactically waste time.

The International Football Association Board has granted permission for the top leagues in English football to trial the new rule in order to tackle goalkeeper tactical pauses

How will this rule play out?

If a goalkeeper was to go down injured on the pitch, whilst the referee signals that the physio can enter the field for treatment, the head coach will have 10 seconds to decide for an outfield player to exit the pitch for one minute after play has restarted.

If a player isn’t selected, the captain must make way.

What is the aim?

The main aim of the trial is to make sure only real injuries receive treatment and to eradicate the misuse of stoppages – most teams allow their goalkeeper to receive treatment for tactical advantages.

How long will the trial last?

The trial will take place throughout the 26/27 season as the IFAB will assess the effectiveness of the trial in supporting the natural flow of the game.

It will focus on reducing delays and stopping teams from slowing down their opponent’s momentum.

For fans, this will be an exciting season ahead as this trial sets to “maintain the pace and flow of matches.”

Are there any exceptions?

Of course, the rule will not apply if a foul is awarded on the goalkeeper or a collision occurs, therefore resulting in treatment.

How has the rule come about?

The Premier League have said:

“There have been times when a goalkeeper has sat down and signalled for the physio and his team have used the break as a competitive advantage. The aim could be to waste time, slow down the opponent’s momentum or to gain their team tactical information from their manager.”

“The aim of the trial is to ensure genuine injuries continue to receive appropriate medical attention while removing any potential advantages.”
