Manchester(Manchester Mirror) April 17, 2026 -Barrow-in-Furness has woken to travel chaos as morning trains to Manchester Airport face significant disruptions from engineering works. As reported by Stephen Holmes of the North West Evening Mail, services operated by Northern and Avanti West Coast are affected starting from the first trains of the day. The works, part of ongoing rail maintenance on the West Coast Main Line, have led to diversions via Preston and Stockport, adding up to 30 minutes to journeys. No exact resumption time was given, but disruptions are expected until late morning.

Northern Rail stated in their update:

“Due to engineering works, trains between Barrow-in-Furness and Manchester Airport will be diverted via Preston and Stockport.”

This impacts the 5:47am service from Barrow, which faces delays of at least 25 minutes. Avanti West Coast confirmed similar issues, noting:

“Our services may be revised or cancelled during peak morning hours.”

Passengers reported online frustration, with one X user posting:

“Stuck waiting for the Barrow to Airport train typical Bank Holiday engineering gone wrong.”

Which Specific Services Are Affected Today?

The disruption hits key commuter and airport routes. According to the North West Evening Mail article by Stephen Holmes, the 5:47am Northern service from Barrow-in-Furness to Manchester Airport is the first affected, with subsequent trains like the 6:22am facing cancellations or 40-minute delays. Avanti West Coast’s 6:15am Manchester Airport to Barrow service is also revised, terminating early at Preston.

National Rail Enquiries listed diversions:

“Trains will call at additional stops including Preston, Wigan North Western, and Stockport.”

Replacement buses are not provided due to the route’s length, leaving passengers to seek alternatives. A Network Rail spokesperson told the North West Evening Mail:

“Essential engineering works overnight require track possession until 10am, affecting 12 services.”

No injuries or major faults reported, but the timing coincides with Friday rush hour.

What Alternatives Do Passengers Have During This Disruption?

Commuters are advised to travel earlier or use buses. As per Northern’s customer update quoted in the North West Evening Mail, “Check our app or National Rail for live timings; consider buses from Barrow to Preston then connect.” Stagecoach Cumbria services like the 6 and 7X run parallel routes hourly, taking about 90 minutes to Preston.

Avanti West Coast recommended:

“Use our refund option within 28 days if disrupted.”

Manchester Airport authority posted on their site:

“Allow extra time; taxis from Barrow take 2.5 hours.”

Local councillor Mark Brewer told BBC Radio Cumbria:

“This highlights the need for better contingency planning on vital airport links.”

No compensation details beyond standard Delay Repay were specified.

How Long Will Barrow-Manchester Airport Train Disruptions Last?

Engineers aim to hand back tracks by midday. Stephen Holmes reported for the North West Evening Mail that Network Rail expects “full service resumption by 12pm, barring unforeseen issues.” Historical data from similar works shows 80% of services recover within two hours. Northern added:

“Disruption eases after 10am as the last diverted train clears.”

Passengers should monitor until evening, as knock-on effects may linger. The Lakes Rail blog noted:

“Morning peaks suffer most from these West Coast upgrades.”

No extension announced yet.
