What Triggered the Deadly Boko Haram Assault?

As reported by Isah Ojo of PUNCH, the attacks unfolded on 4 April 2026, starting at about 0100hrs when “armed terrorists suspected to be members of Boko Haram/ISWAP attacked the Nganzai Divisional Police Headquarters in an attempt to overrun the town.” Police divisional officers, alongside PMF operatives and Crack Squad on special duty, engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle. The insurgents deployed Rocket-Propelled Grenades (RPGs) and other sophisticated weapons, causing damage to a section of the station and partially burning an unserviceable Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC). Regrettably, four police personnel paid the supreme price in the line of duty.

Nganzai lies less than 100 kilometres north of Maiduguri, Borno State’s capital, in a region long plagued by jihadist insurgency. According to BSS/AFP reporting, militants raided the police station, killing four policemen amid a surge in violence. This coordinated strike aimed to overwhelm local defences but was thwarted by a resolute security response.

Who Were the Four Fallen Officers?

The deceased were identified by ASP Nahum Daso, Borno Police PRO, as Inspector Samuel Ezekiel of Nganzai Division, Inspector Sanusi Mohammed of 58 PMF Lafiya, Police Constable Bitrus Luka of Crack Squad BRS, and Police Constable Shaibu Bukar of Crack Squad BRS. As detailed by Zagazola Makama of Authority News, these gallant personnel included Inspector Samuel Ezekiel of Nganzai Division, Inspector Sanusi Mohammed of 58 PMF Lafia, Police Constable Bitrus Luka of the Crack Squad, and Police Constable Shaibu Bukar of the Crack Squad.

These officers exemplified bravery, sacrificing their lives to protect their community from terrorist incursion. Their units, ranging from local divisions to mobile force and elite crack squads, underscore the multi-layered defence against Boko Haram/ISWAP.

How Did the Damasak IDP Camp Attack Unfold?

In a linked incident at about 0240hrs on the same day, terrorists targeted Mallam Fatori IDP Camp in Damasak, attacking a CJTF/Hunters duty post at the entrance. As stated by ASP Nahum Daso,

“During the attack, one member of the Hunters Group, Atom Abua (40 years), lost his life, while about twenty thatched houses and properties were destroyed.”

PUNCH had reported on Saturday that suspected Boko Haram terrorists struck both the IDP camp at Damasak and the Nganzai Police HQ, killing four officers and one hunter while partially burning an APC. This dual assault reflects the insurgents’ strategy to hit both security outposts and vulnerable civilian sites.

Where and When Was the Police Burial Held?

The solemn interment ceremony occurred on 05/04/2026 at Kawar Maila Burial Ground and the Maximum Prison Burial Ground, Maiduguri, in accordance with religious rites. By Zagazola Makama of Authority News, the ceremony was held at these sites in Maiduguri, following Islamic and Christian rites.

Isah Ojo of PUNCH noted it took place on Sunday, with rites conducted by Command Chaplaincies officers CSP Bukar Gajibo (Imam) and CSP Theophilus Mutum (Chaplain), who offered prayers for the repose of the souls. The event drew dignitaries despite the grief.

Who Attended the Officers’ Funeral?

Attendees included Commissioner of Police, Borno State Command, Naziru Abdulmajid; Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, ACP Jawi A. Mohammed; and other management team members. Security sources cited by Zagazola Makama confirmed CP Naziru Abdulmajid, ACP Jawi A. Mohammed (Operations), and senior officers were present.

This high-level presence signals institutional recognition of the sacrifice. ASP Nahum Daso emphasised,

“The command honours their courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to duty.”

Authorities assured ongoing operations against terrorists.

What Do Police Say About Repelling the Attacks?

ASP Nahum Daso stated,

“The Borno State Police Command has successfully repelled coordinated terrorist attacks on Nganzai and Damasak communities, restoring normalcy and reinforcing security deployments in the affected areas.”

The fierce engagement prevented the town from being overrun, despite the heavy weaponry used by attackers.

Daso provided the breakdown: police collaborated effectively to push back the insurgents. The command’s statement underscores restored calm and bolstered presence.

Why Is Boko Haram Still a Threat in Borno?

Boko Haram/ISWAP continue to launch audacious raids, as seen in this incident less than 100km from Maiduguri. BSS/AFP highlighted a surge in jihadist violence, with recent suicide bombings in Maiduguri killing 23. Guardian Nigeria reported four operatives killed in a gun duel with Boko Haram and ISWAP.

The attacks on police HQ and IDP camp illustrate tactics targeting security and civilians. Despite repels, casualties mount, straining resources in Nigeria’s northeast.

How Has the Command Honoured the Deceased?

The police command described them as gallant, paying the supreme price. Prayers and rites honoured their service. As per Isah Ojo’s PUNCH coverage, the chaplaincies led tributes.

This burial reinforces solidarity among forces. Efforts persist to neutralise threats, per authorities.
