As reported by Caitlin Embradura of The Mancunion, major tramlines in Manchester are undergoing construction from 19 October to 1 November 2026. The disruption affects some of the busiest routes on the Metrolink network, with Transport for Greater Manchester warning passengers to plan ahead and allow extra time for journeys.

The works are concentrated at Deansgate-Castlefield and Trafford Bar, two key locations where several tram routes converge. Additional works are also taking place in Manchester city centre during the same period.

According to TfGM, no trams will operate on the Altrincham, Trafford Centre and Eccles lines throughout the closure. The operator says the closure is necessary to allow track replacement and wider improvement work to be carried out safely.

Which Manchester Tram Lines Are Affected?

The most significant disruption affects three lines: Altrincham, Trafford Centre and Eccles. TfGM has confirmed that no tram services are operating on these routes from Monday 19 October until Sunday 1 November.

As reported by ITV Granada Reports, the closures form part of a major upgrade that will allow around 4km of tram track between Trafford Bar and Deansgate-Castlefield to be replaced. The broadcaster stated that the work is part of a £150m programme of investment in the tram network.

Passengers using the East Didsbury and Manchester Airport lines are also affected. TfGM says services on these routes will terminate at Firswood rather than continuing into the city centre. From Firswood, passengers must board a replacement bus service to complete their journey.

Rochdale line passengers face a separate change. TfGM says services on the Rochdale line will terminate at Exchange Square, rather than operating through the usual city-centre route.

What Replacement Travel Is Available?

TfGM has introduced a range of alternative travel options during the two-week closure. These include limited-stop express shuttle buses, existing Bee Network bus services and rail services.

As reported by the Bury Times, an express shuttle is running every 10 minutes between Sale, Stretford, Trafford Bar, Deansgate-Castlefield and Piccadilly for passengers affected by the Altrincham line closure.

A separate direct express shuttle is operating between Altrincham and Piccadilly every 15 minutes between 7am and 7pm. The Bury Times reported that passengers can also use Bee Network bus services 245, 249, 263 and 286, as well as trains between Altrincham and Manchester.

For the Trafford Park line, an express shuttle is running every 15 minutes between the Trafford Centre and Piccadilly. According to the Bury Times, it calls at Trafford Palazzo, Parkway, Village, Imperial War Museum, Wharfside and Deansgate-Castlefield. Bee Network bus services 30, 100 and 250 are also available.

On the Eccles line, an express shuttle is operating every 15 minutes from MediaCityUK to Deansgate-Castlefield and Piccadilly. Passengers travelling from East Didsbury and Manchester Airport can use an express shuttle every 10 minutes from Chorlton via Firswood and Deansgate-Castlefield to Piccadilly.

TfGM says eligible longer-term Metrolink pass holders can use affected Bee Network services and, where relevant, Northern train services during the disruption.

Why Is TfGM Carrying Out the Works?

The engineering work is intended to replace ageing tram track on one of the busiest sections of the Metrolink network. TfGM says the section between Trafford Bar and Deansgate-Castlefield is particularly important because five tram lines come together there.

According to TfGM’s press release, around 4km of track will be replaced during this phase. The works form part of a multi-year £150m investment programme to maintain, renew and improve Greater Manchester’s tram network.

TfGM says the investment is designed to make the network safer, more resilient and more reliable. The organisation also says the work will allow further speed restrictions to be lifted, which could lead to quicker journeys once services return to normal.

As reported by the BBC, about 6km of track was replaced on the Metrolink network during earlier engineering work in the summer. The broadcaster reported that the Eccles, Trafford Centre and Altrincham lines were closed for three weeks during that earlier phase, as part of the same £150m upgrade programme.

When Will Normal Tram Services Resume?

TfGM says tram services on the affected lines are due to resume from the start of service on Monday 2 November. However, passengers have been warned that normal operations will not immediately return across the whole network.

Some minor route changes through Manchester city centre will remain in place from Monday 2 November until Wednesday 4 November. TfGM says these changes are linked to the additional city-centre works carried out during the main closure period.

Passengers are being advised to check the Bee Network app or website before travelling, particularly during the first days after services resume. TfGM has repeatedly urged passengers to plan journeys in advance and allow additional time.

What Do Transport Operators Say?

TfGM has described the works as essential to the long-term operation of the Metrolink network. The organisation says the scale and complexity of the project means some lines must close for the full two-week period.

As reported by Stan Tomkinson of Greatest Hits Radio, Metrolink bosses described the works as the most disruptive piece of engineering work ever carried out on the network. The report stated that around 4,000 metres of track is being replaced at Deansgate-Castlefield and Trafford Bar.

TfGM says replacement buses will operate with limited stops, focusing on key locations on the busiest parts of the network. In some areas, passengers may need to use existing Bee Network bus services, rail, walking or cycling options instead.

The operator has also highlighted the importance of checking travel information before setting out, as journey times and available routes may differ significantly from normal.

Background of the Development

The current closure is the latest phase of a wider, multi-year investment programme by Transport for Greater Manchester to renew and improve the Metrolink network. The programme, valued at £150m, covers maintenance, track renewal and improvements intended to support reliable tram services across Greater Manchester.

The works focus on the section between Trafford Bar, Cornbrook and Deansgate-Castlefield. TfGM says this is one of the busiest parts of the network, where five tram lines come together, making it a priority for track replacement.

Earlier in 2026, the Eccles, Trafford Centre and Altrincham lines were closed for three weeks during a previous phase of the upgrade. According to the BBC, about 6km of track was replaced during that summer work.

The current phase involves the replacement of around 4km of track between Trafford Bar and Deansgate-Castlefield. TfGM says the work is being carried out in phases because of its scale and complexity, with the aim of keeping disruption to passengers as low as possible.

Prediction: How Will This Affect Manchester Passengers?

The closure is likely to have the greatest impact on daily commuters, students, airport passengers and people travelling to destinations including MediaCityUK, Old Trafford, the Trafford Centre and Salford Quays.

For commuters, the closure may mean longer journeys, additional changes between tram, bus and rail services, and the need to allow extra time during peak hours. Passengers who normally travel directly into the city centre from Altrincham, Eccles or the Trafford Centre will need to use shuttle buses or alternative Bee Network services.

For football supporters travelling to Old Trafford, TfGM has warned that journeys on matchdays may be different from usual. The operator advises supporters to plan ahead and allow more time, particularly while the major works remain in place.

Airport passengers using the Manchester Airport line should also allow additional time. Services are terminating at Firswood, requiring a replacement bus connection to reach the city centre.

Once the works finish, passengers may benefit from improved track conditions and the removal of further speed restrictions. TfGM says this should support quicker and more reliable tram journeys, although the full effect will become clearer once normal services resume and the remaining city-centre changes end on 4 November.
